Narrative-Based Therapy for Women in Los Angeles
In-person and virtual Psychodynamic Therapy for women in my Los Angeles office in West Hollywood. Learn to rewrite your own story so you can find meaning and purpose.
THE BASICS
What is Narrative-Based Therapy?
As you might expect from the name, in narrative therapy you are encouraged to view your life as a narrative or story. The main assumption is that you are not the problem, you are just experiencing problems. The same way that the main character of your favorite movie or book might be experiencing problems, but that doesn’t mean those problems are personal flaws or failures.
The goal of narrative therapy is to help you reduce shame, guilt and over-identification with your challenges so you can look at yourself and your life from an external, birds-eye perspective. By getting some distance from the idea that you ARE your problems, narrative therapy hopes to help you see repeating patterns, find meaning and purpose in your journey, explore possible solutions and ultimately, “rewrite” your own story in a way that feels empowering.
THE BENEFITS
What can Narrative-Based Therapy help with?
Narrative therapy is designed to shift away from the idea of that mental health challenges are a core flaw and instead, support you in finding your own personal power by identifying your purpose and core values.
Attachment-based therapy can help you:
✦ Reduce self-blame, shame and guilt around mental health challenges
✦ Learn to externalize things like anxiety, depression and other common symptoms
✦ Shift away from a permanent, disempowering “sick” label
✦ Recenter yourself as the expert and “hero” in your own life
✦ Rewrite past experiences to be empowering and meaningful
✦ Start to see your life through the perspective of strength & resilience
✦ Create a new life story that is uplifting, deeply meaningful and purpose-driven
WHAT TO EXPECT
What happens during Attachment-Based Therapy?
In narrative therapy, my function as a therapist is that of a re-assuring partner rather than a medical authority figure trying to tell you what to do. In our sessions, you are seen as the expert in your own life and my purpose is to ask questions that can help guide your explorations and thinking.
-
I’m much more interested in learning about you, what drives you, your interests, personal strengths and core values. We’ll always focus on exploring these first so I can get a better picture of who you are outside of your struggles and challenges.
-
Instead of trying to work through your entire life’s story at once and feeling overwhelmed, we’ll break things down into smaller pieces and see how you feel about them.
-
Rather than only focusing on when things were bad, we’ll also intentionally look for moments where you felt a sense of meaning, resilience or gratitude - despite the struggles.
-
Using these moments of light, your personal strengths and the core values, I’ll guide you so you can create a newer, more hopeful narrative for yourself - one that encourages a sense of meaning, purpose and agency.
BEYOND NARRATIVE THERAPY
My holistic therapy approach to support the whole you - mind, body & spirit
You may be coming to therapy with a specific approach in mind. Maybe you’ve heard that Narrative Therapy can help you see your life from a new perspective. If you’re interested in exploring narrative therapy specifically, you’re more than welcome to let me know and we can incorporate that type of work into your treatment.
More often than not, therapy isn’t quite that straight-lined though. Holistic healing requires that you look at all the areas of your life - past and present, mind, body (and sometimes spirit). To achieve that, I like to use a variety of different types of approaches. That means one session we might use psychodynamic therapy to explore past experiences. Another, we might use attachment-based therapy to better understand your relationship patterns. If you’re struggling with anxious thoughts, we might explore CBT-based tools and if you’re struggling to feel present in your body, we might try some somatic-based tools.
My goal is never to fit you into one particular therapeutic model. It's to draw from the approaches that are most helpful for you when they are needed so we can achieve holistic healing on all levels.
