Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Women in Los Angeles
In-person and virtual Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for women in my Los Angeles office in West Hollywood. Learn to understand how your mind works and create new habits that serve you.
THE BASICS
What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT for short) is one of the most commonly used and most popular modalities in therapy. It is a form of talk therapy that is based on helping you understand how your mind works: certain situations trigger established thought patterns in your mind which then cause a variety of emotional, behavioral and physical reactions.
By gaining awareness of those thought patterns, noticing them when they happen and starting to replace them with healthier & more realistic thoughts, you can actively start to change your negative emotions, moods & beliefs about yourself.
In many cases, CBT may be used as one part of a holistic mental health treatment, rather than a standalone approach. We might use CBT strategies to help you address and improve current symptoms quickly, while using other approaches (like psychodynamic therapy) to dig deeper into why you’re struggling with certain things in the first place.
THE BENEFITS
What can Cognitive Behavioral Therapy help me with?
Thanks to its short-term, practical and hands-on nature, CBT can be used for a variety of different mental health challenges to help you get relief quickly.
CBT can help you:
✦ Help you spot unhelpful thought patterns & belief systems that are causing distress
✦ Learn practical coping skills to use in moments of dysregulation & emotional activation
✦ Stop harsh self-criticism by replacing negative thought patterns with realistic ones
✦ Stop chronic bad moods, depression & anxiety caused by negative mental loops
✦ Improve self-esteem, confidence and create a more optimistic sense of self
✦ Learn techniques to feel more relaxed, calmed and grounded during your day
WHAT TO EXPECT
What happens during Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?
-
When you first get started with therapy, we’ll talk through what is going on in your life, what areas are currently causing distress for you or what goals you’d like to set for yourself.
-
Once we know what areas you’d like to work on, we’ll start helping you build awareness around thought patterns that are coming up in those areas. You’ll keep a close eye on daily thoughts, self-talk to better understand what situations trigger you and what kind of distortions your mind may be responding with (for example jumping to conclusions to worst-case scenario thinking).
-
After we’ve developed awareness around your current thought patterns, we’ll work on challenging them and establishing newer, more realistic versions of the truth. We’ll practice a variety of practical skills that you can use in the heat of the moment to help you shift from old-pattern thinking to the newly established thought patterns.
-
With your newly learned coping skills in hand, you’ll be asked to gradually and safely approach situations that might have triggered you before and practice your new tools. Not every technique will work for you and that’s okay. The goal is to test out different ones and find what is most effective for you personally so you can establish a toolkit you can rely on.
-
As we go through this process, we’ll always track how your emotions, behaviors and moods start to shift so we can see the progress you’re making. Over time, you’ll begin to feel more comfortable in your new ways of thinking and become more confident in handling stressors.
BEYOND CBT
My holistic therapy approach to support the whole you - mind, body & spirit
You may be coming to therapy with a specific approach in mind. Maybe you’ve heard that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is supposed to be effective at helping with your anxiety symptoms. If you’re interested in exploring a specific therapeutic approach, you’re more than welcome to let me know and we can incorporate that type of work into your treatment.
More often than not, therapy isn’t quite that straight-lined though. Holistic healing requires that you look at all the areas of your life - past and present, mind, body (and sometimes spirit). To achieve that, I like to use a variety of different types of approaches. That means one session we might use psychodynamic therapy to explore past experiences. Another, we might use attachment-based therapy to better understand your relationship patterns. If you’re struggling with anxious thoughts, we might explore CBT-based tools and if you’re struggling to feel present in your body, we might try some somatic-based tools.
My goal is never to fit you into one particular therapeutic model. It's to draw from the approaches that are most helpful for you when they are needed so we can achieve holistic healing on all levels.
